Holistic Approach to Unravel Antibacterial Resistance in East Africa (HATUA) is an interdisciplinary study which is exploring the burden and drivers of antibacterial resistance (ABR) associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs) across East Africa. Led by Prof. Matthew Holden (School of Medicine), in St Andrews this represents a collaboration between the Schools of Medicine, Geography and Sustainable Development, Biology, and Mathematics and Statistics. More widely, this is a collaboration with colleagues in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Within the Statistical Medicine and Molecular Biology research group, Jing, Lynch, Papathomas, Sippy and Worthington are all involved – mainly working on the Bayesian modelling of the rich and complex data set that has been amassed.
